Round Up: Yahoo Optimizes; MotoProjectors; Filipino DVB-H

Yahoo will optimize for mobile handsets the web pages that people surf to through its oneSearch service, undoubtedly a bid to make surfing the web via mobile (via Yahoo) are better experience. It’s using Novarra‘s Vision platform, which The Register notes is the same technology that Vodafone UK took up recently which caused some problems which web sites that tried to do their own optimization.(release)

Motorola is working with Microvision to develop pico projectors for mobile handsets — the idea is that the phones will “project Web sites, presentations and multimedia visuals onto a nearby surface”. Microvision reckons its laser-based projector PicoP is small and doesn’t use much power, making it appropriate for handsets reports RCR News.

Mobile TV in the Philippines: There are some new details on the DVB-H effort in the Philippines between MediaQuest (a subsidiary of PLDT, which also owns Filipino broadcaster NBC) and Smart Wireless. The $50 million investment cited is by PLDT and doesn’t include investment from Smart. There’ll be 10 channels in the myTV service, and the cost will be 488 Philippine pesos (US$10.78) a month. Smart hopes to sign up 60,000 to 70,000 to the service in the next few months.

Rok has launched the Rok Media Store, a free web-based application which lets people load music from their PCs to the memory card for their mobile phone. As far as I can tell the drawcard is simplicity, although people can enter their handset details. Rok intends to generate revenue through online advertising and selling content via their websit (with its own compression and DRM technologies). (release)

Indian state-owned operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has teamed with Essel Group’s Digital Media Convergence Ltd (DMCL) to launch a mobile TV application, ISEE, which will stream videos. The service will cost Rs 150 per month (US$3.73) reports Hindustan Times.

Legendary comics creator Stan Lee is getting his own ringtones — Spike TV is entering the mobile content market with some of Stan’s famous quotes, and will include messages about your secret identity, or messages for your arch-nemesis or sidekick reports DMN.
