A subtle but important change in stance from Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), on its stand on the upcoming spectrum auction in U.S.: Lowell McAdam, CEO of VZW said the company would agree to rules requiring the network operator who wins a portion of the spectrum to allow any device onto its network — not just those the operator sells in its stores, reports WSJ. But Verizon says the operator shouldn’t be required to guarantee that all games, video and the Web apps on the new phones will work properly, and would still reserve the right to continue blocking certain applications and features for phones it sells.
McAdam raised the proposal in a meeting with FCC Chairman Kevin Martin on Tuesday. But McAdam also said Verizon wouldn’t be able to police offending content on third-party phones the way it has done very aggressively on its own locked handsets.
