Broadcom has another win in its patent dispute with Qualcomm — operator Verizon has agreed to pay royalties which will allow it to import and distribute the disputed handsets. “Verizon Wireless said it will pay Broadcom $6 for each handset in question, up to $40 million per calendar quarter and up to a maximum total payment of $200 million” reports Reuters. Qualcomm has rejected a $6 per handset royalty fee proposed by Broadcom. Considering Verizon subsidizes its handsets anyway it probably doesn’t seem like a lot of money for the telco to pay to ensure its high-end business is not interrupted. Perhaps more importantly, Verizon has also “entered a strategic alliance with Broadcom involving new mobile phone chips and other products”.
