Microsoft Looks Beyond The Usual For Mobile Magic

Microsoft has had a patchy track record in the mobile space: while Windows Mobile has gained good traction in the business market, the software giant has had less success in its attempts to enter the more mass-appeal consumer market with its Smartphone operating system loaded onto smaller handsets. But this is not stopping the company from continuing to dabble in the space to see if it can still strike gold.

This week Microsoft hosted its annual Microsoft Research Faculty Summit, an event where in-house developers meet with industry folk to talk about new technology. This time, writes Infoworld, there was a big emphasis on the mobile phone and ways of using it.

Among the niche products to help combat sleep apnea, and ways of turning your phone into a heartbeat-monitor-cum-physical trainer, one interesting product was the Fone+, which lets a person use a mobile handset to control the television and access the Internet through the bigger screen. This kind of technology is already being investigated by other mobile vendors
