Airtel Launches Regional Content Voice Portal; Why Should Consumers Pay To Shop For Content?

Following the launch of its Music Station, BS reports the launch of a music portal with regional content by Airtel in Karnataka, which allows users to download content like ringtones, devotional songs; they intend to launch astrology news and other services as well. The pricing – at Re 1 per minute, and a monthly rental for Rs 15 for access – is rather high. They’re just skimming the market ’cause they’re offering differentiated content – I really don’t see why a consumer should be charged to shop for content; beats the whole idea of digital distribution being cheaper for the seller.

Some stats from the report: Airtel has added 2.2 million subs in Karnataka over the past year, which gives it 39 percent marketshare at around 5 million subs.
