Datawind PocketSurfer 2: small browsing device for the U.K.

Pocketsurfer_2The Register got their mitts on the PocketSurfer 2 made by Datawind and while the device sounded promising, it appears that the Reg was generally underwhelmed. The PocketSurfer 2 is a basic Internet browser with a full keyboard and a 640 x 420 wide display; with those dimensions you’ll be zooming and scrolling quite a bit. Similar to the ThunderHawk browsing service, the PocketSurfer pulls web pages from Datawind’s servers where they’re presumably optimized for the device’s screen and connection. Speaking of the connection: you’ll pay nothing for your data in the first year. The 180 pound price includes 20 hours a month for browsing; after the first year, you’ll pay….something. The company hasn’t decided yet. The handheld gets five hours of battery life, comparable to the Nokia N800, which at 279 pounds (including VAT) might be a better alternative.
