DoCoMo has begun testing an experimental Super 3G system (also known as Long Term Evolution, or LTE), which it hopes will achieve a downlink transmission rate of 300 Mbps over the mobile network. Technical tests are a far cry from commercial deployments, of course, but when that sort of network gets rolled out it will have a significantly positive effect on mobile services. The technology is viewed as a stepping stone to 4G networks, reports InfoWorld. “In experiments conducted in late December last year the carrier came close to hitting a 5Gbps data transmission speed from an experimental 4G system to a receiver moving at 10 kilometers per hour.” That’s still several years away outside of Japan, of course, and content developers are better off looking to WiMAX as the next gen, at least in the US. Still, the technology is out there…
