Omnifone, a music subscription service launching in Europe with partnerships with major labels and handset manufacturers, may not be going with an operator partner in the UK. In response to a suggestion that Carphone Warehouse would offer the Omnifone service Mobile Today quotes a spokesperson for Omnifone saying “We can confirm that we are in advanced discussions with a UK high street retailer”. Carphone Warehouse is the biggest, but even if the talks are with someone else it doesn’t change the business model, which is the interesting thing. These sorts of services would usually require a carrier partner to minimize data charges, but there are all-you-can-eat data plans in the UK so a retailer can effectively offer a content subscription service. This sort of thing is happening more often in the UK and is obviously good for the mobile content industry — hopefully the carriers will view it as good for them also.
