Dotmobi Now Tries With City Names

[by Ingrid Lunden] Not that .mobi has been a great hit till now, but that doesn’t prevent dotmobi, the company that administers the domain name for trying harder: the company is releasing 650 city names to develop relevant consumer mobile Web content. The first city to launch services using its name is Helsinki, Finland, which has been offering tourist information via the portal since the city hosted the kitschy but much-watched Eurovision song contest in May 2007.

Dotmobi says cities can obtain their domain names under the condition that they provide proposals of their services to Dotmobi in advance and commit to launching live services within 60 days of acquisition and that the services meet usability standards set forward by the administrators.

Dotmobi says that overall, 600,000 .mobi names have been registered already, although active sites are currently number only in the thousands.

The list of available city names can be found here.
