DC Comics, the publisher of Superman and Batman, is trying to expand its online profile and its bank account by giving aspiring writers and artists a chance to become paid professionals through a new site called Zudacomics. The company occasionally has discovered new talent in its “slush pile” of unsolicited work. But, as the NYT reports, this is the first time the Warner Bros. Entertainment division has tried to formalize and encourage that process. Entries must be all new, made specifically for the web, and feature only original characters.
The site that just went live is a step beyond placeholder for now. In October, DC editors will begin posting 10 entries a month; users will vote on which ones are deemed the best. The winners will be given a contract and paid for their work. As many as six submissions a year might be declared instant winners by the editors as well. Others might eventually make into print as part of a Zudacomics collection. DC’s bottom-line goal: expand its intellectual property library — and, with it, licensing possibilities.
