Frontline Gets $5M to Move Online

PBS’ award-winning documentary and news series Frontline has gotten a $5 million grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur foundation to go towards creating original content for the web over the next five years, according to Variety. It’s good news for a great show that features some of the most insightful video reporting in America.

The latest episode, Endgame, reports on the plans for a troop surge in Iraq (embedded below).

The series, produced by WGBH Boston, is already offering much of its video online — I wrote about Kevin Burton’s custom feed for the show in April. Part of the money will go towards developing a new video player. I would suggest saving the money and simply partnering with one of the many startups who’ve already done that work.
