ASSOCHAM Report Estimates That VAS Will Be Rs. 8200 Crores By March 2008

A day before VAS India 2007, ASSOCHAM estimates that the Mobile Value Added Services market will touch Rs. 8200 crores Billion by March 2008. Currently, VAS is estimated at Rs. 4950 crores. Some stats:

— Ringtone downloads, between 600,000-800,000 per day a year ago have grown by 50 percent annually. Expected to be around Rs. 270 crores by March 2008
— Mobile Music Downloads are at $75 million, and are expected to increase by 75 percent by March 2008
— The Indian music industry earned more than US$35 million, or 20% of its revenues, from mobile music.
— Radio Mirchi gets 50,000-60,000 SMS’ a day
— The Sun Network gets between 50,000-1.5 lakh SMS’ each day for its various channels.

So SMS is clearly considered to be a part of VAS by all and sundry. I’m more interested in the non-SMS figures – for content like gaming, videos, wallpapers, music, ringtones, voice portals and CRBTs. We’ll try and get the report…Some of the figures mentioned in what appears to be a release are old. What’s also strange is that the report looks at mobile gaming numbers for Asiapac, but doesn’t mention any numbers for India.
