Is it a Tablet PC? Is a UMPC? I’m not sure yet, but the "Edy Personal Computer" platform sounds like a 3 pound slate device. The usual suspects are involved, namely Intel and Microsoft, and one unusual one: Bit Wallet, a Japanese online payment business. Intel seems to have mandated some specifications, much like Microsoft did with Origami Project devices. Devices in this new class will offer the standard and expected connectivity, i.e.: Ethernet and WiFi. The interesting spec is in the storage: SSD or Solid State flash drives are required, which of course is helpful for battery life and performance. No keyboard or mouse but touch seems to be a definite inclusion. Let’s see if a new interface evolves that’s more user friendly, since the intended audience for this device is the non-computer user. Perhaps this will be more consumer focused than today’s UMPCs?
I’m not sure what the expected device will look like, but the source article shows the PBJ Slate DT which looks like a close cousin to the Tablet Kiosk Sahara Slate. Let’s see if The Register is on to something here…
