NFL’s Video Policy: Efforts By ASNE and APSE To Move The Needle

I posted last night about NFL’s totalitarian policies on usage of online video on other new sites. Both American Society of Newspaper Editors and Associated Press Sports Editors have been lobbying with NFL on changing or at least modifying these rules and have sent letters and met with NFL reps in person late last month. Scott Anderson documents the meeting and other efforts on his site in this blog post..and also more details on the rules. Some points that did not come across earlier: any interview done away from the stadium, locker room, or practice facility, can be as long as the journalists want and can stay on the site for as long as editors want. Also, the 45-second rule only applies to time the player or coach is talking or on-screen. The NFL representatives indicated there is room in this policy for a one-out agreement with the local clubs on a case-by-case basis regarding special packages or presentations.

Make sure you read the links below in Scott’s post, including the full report on the meeting, the next steps, the full NFL rules as a PDF, among others.
