July 24 Pier Screenings: When Content = Advertising

We’ve been having a ball at our summer Pier Screenings series, and are excited to announce this month’s event. Good news for people who hate being cold: this month we’re trying something different and showing the movies indoors at the Metreon in San Francisco.

This month’s theme is the intersection of content and advertising. What’s that mean? Well, online video creators are doing their best to prove that old techniques for creation and distribution of content aren’t the only way. Commissioned user-generated ads, endorsements and sponsorships, and product placement are sometimes controversial extensions of that innovation to monetization.

Our guest speaker this month is Greg Goodfried, co-creator of the Lonelygirl15 series. He tell us about his team’s efforts to monetize their hit internet series by utilizing methods such as product placement, to the extent of including a sponsored character from Neutrogena (mentioned in the clip above).

A couple days ago we gave you the scoop on the Lonelygirl guys’ new project, KateModern, which looks to be setting new records in product placement, with three P&G brands, Buena Vista International, Orange and WindowsLive participating (note: this is an update from what we reported on Friday). We’ll be discussing these topics and whatever else you’d like to hear Goodfried talk about.

The submissions and RSVP pages are up and running, so let us know if you’d like to join in on the fun.

And if you’d like to join Metacafe, Fabrik, and vod:pod in sponsoring the event, please contact Joanne Wan (joey at gigaom dot com).
