Google Acquires Voice Communications Manager GrandCentral

Google adds to its web app collection with the acquisition of privately held Grand Central Communications, a company that allows users to link multiple phone numbers to one life-long central number and manage it all — including voice mail — online. No terms were disclosed; the company was backed by Halsey Minor’s Minor Ventures. The Fremont, CA-based startup was in beta and will stay that way with Google for now. One change: Google won’t allow users to create custom ringtones; instead they’ll have to choose from licensed options. Co-founders Craig Walker and Vincent Paquet will stay on.
