Zee Ties Up With BSNL For Video Content On Mobile

Digital Media Convergence Ltd (DMCL), a Zee group company has tied up with mobile operator BSNL to offer video content on the mobile; a service branded ISEE. ISEE News has content from Zee News, including Sports Top 10 and Life Top 10, as well as other news related content. ISEE TV has mobisodes, while ISEE ZEE has entire 30 minute episodes of TV shows like Sath Fere and Dulhan. Other content includes Tazaa Maal, After Hours, Simply Style, Bollywood and jokes. The content, refreshed regularly, will be a maximum of seven days old, and will be uploaded thrice a day.

I was wondering how this will be feasible, and Ishwar Jha, Sr. VP for Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, told me that Zee has hosted servers locally with BSNL in each zone. That means that it will utilize only local bandwidth. Still, video content is bandwidth heavy, and quality of streaming could be an issue. The service is being provided at speeds of 22 to 43kbps on edge. The cost to consumer is Rs. 150 per month for unlimited viewing for 30 days. Zee is targeting 25,000 subscribers per zone.

The Mint adds that the service will be launched in North India next month, and is targetting 500,000 customers in the region. It is claimed that the service can support 10,000 simultaneous users.
