Sweet deal from EarthLink. No, they’re not a dead-and-gone dial-up ISP; they’re a nearly dead-and-gone dial-up ISP that’s actually reinventing themselves by contracting out municipal WiFi. Oh wait, that’s right; I mentioned a sweet deal, so here it is. Nokia N800 owners get free WiFi service from EarthLink on those municipal networks; no dice on those Nokia N770s that just left woot! the other day.
Here in my neck of the woods, the City of Philadelphia partnered with EarthLink to WiFi-ify the entire city, which is quite large. I recently read about the first trials in The Philadelphia Inquirer and while there are still kinks to be worked out with coverage, it’s a nice deal. If I recall, you got monthly access for $19.95 a month and once the network is completed, that service is good anywhere within the city limits. While the EarthLink deal is only good for half-a-dozen cities or so, this might help set a precedent for more free Internet deals on mobile devices.
