A couple of NYT guys (Michael Young from The New York Times Company R&D group and Nick Bilton from The New York Times art department) have created an application which links the mobile phone to the computer, called Shifd. The phone has an RFID chip and the computer an RFID reader so when the phone is placed next to the computer that fact is recognised. People can decide what they want on their phone (news feeds, “to do” items and so on) on the computer, and when they pick up the phone the computer sends an SMS message with a link to the mobile webpage and everything they wanted there. If they mark a news piece as “read later” it shows up on their computer when they put the phone back on the RFID reader. There’s a video here. It’s a pretty neat application — not so much for plugging news items into the mobile but for the seamless way the phone and computer interconnect. There’s a lot that can be done with this, and with a wireless link to the computer for sideloading it would be a really neat app.
