During my Nokia N800 review period I didn’t watch too many YouTube vids, but apparenlty Flash video in the browser is challenging for the Swiss Army Knife of ultra-portables. Leave it to the developer community to continue making a good product even better. One such enterprising N800 owner put together a small application called UKTube that downloads YouTube videos right to the MMC storage; it then fires up MPlayer for full screen playback. My experience with the N800 screen was nothing short of stellar, so full-screen, smooth YouTube playback must look great on the device. If you’re not sure, you can watch the above video demo of this young app.
I believe MPlayer is capable of handling H.264 playback, so hopefully the recent YouTube re-encoding for the AppleTV and iPhone won’t impact UKTube negatively.
