OMA Release Mobile TV Guidelines, Celcom Signs Rok TV

The Open Mobile Alliance has released its new Mobile Broadcast (BCAST) Version 1.0 Candidate Enabler, which is intended to drive interoperability between mobile TV service and features such as electronic service guides, DRM and interactive functions, reports TelecomAsia. “BCAST, which has already seen pre-standard support from over 35 vendors, works with any IP-based mobile content delivery technology. It also offers a potential roaming element by applying to 3G cellular networks running unicast and multicast streaming.” (OMA Release PDF)

In other mobile TV news, Malaysian operator Celcom has signed a deal with ROK TV to launch mobile TV services over both GPRS and 3G networks. The service will launch in August, at which point the subscription fee will be announced, reports PhoneContent. “Subscribers will be able to view various shows on their mobile phones ranging from breaking news and sports news to cartoon series, rap music and entertainment news. Among the channels available are ABC News Now, Al-Jazeera, ITN, SNTV, Xtreme TV, and Mixcast.”
