Billdesk Eyeing The Mobile Payments Space

Electronic bill payments company Billdesk intends to enable bill payments via the mobile, by the next quarter, reports Business Standard. Billdesk founder MN Srinivasu says that the company has already tied up with around 35 banks as well as telecom operators. Srinivasu expects the mobile enablement to increase their customerbase to 100 million by 2010. Billdesk intends to enable registration of mobile numbers with bank accounts, so that verification is not needed every time.
Well, I think that works both ways – as a consumer, having to verify with each purchase can be a pain, but it also does give me a sense of security. No verification is probably fine as long as it’s limited to payment of bills for utilities, but not when it comes to payment for purchases. Companies already in the mobile payment segment include MChek, Jigrahak, Paymate, Obopay. Sam Pitroda’s CSam also has mobile payment solutions, and then there are those like NXP Semiconductors who are pitching for the Near Field Communications mode of payments, which require handsets to have RFID chips. Too many players?
