That’s five till now for Google, versus the traditional topper Cisco, which bought four, according to VentureWire. For years Cisco has been the most prolific acquirer of venture-backed start-ups, pocketing 22 such companies since 2004, according to VentureOne data. And the varied range of companies Google is buying is also impressive: Peakstream, a maker of software for running powerful computers; FeedBurner, the RSS metrics firm; Greenborder, a maker of software that protects PCs and corporate networks from malicious emails; Marratech, a producer of software for video conferencing over the Internet; and Adscape Media, the in-game ad firm. There’s probably at least half-dozen others, if not more, in the pipeline (well, then there’s DoubleClick, still pending).
