Airtel will be testing a traffic information service in Bangalore to provide real time traffic updates to commuters via their cell phones and the Internet, according to this story on Indiantelevision.com. The project will be a tie-up between Airtel, the Bangalore city traffic police and Mapunity Information Services, a developer of geographic information systems. Airtel has provided capital expenditure for setting up the micro towers and the data for ‘Travel time estimation’, based on which Mapunity has designed a predictive algorithm. The algorithm relates the number of transaction counts from a cell phone tower to congestion in that area. Waits to be seen if productivity at Bangalore-based companies goes up because of this initiative as employees beat the traffic and finally get to work on time.
