At the second Telecom Regulatory Seminar organized by the CII, the emphasis was on expanding telecom services to rural areas, and enabling broadband. Nripendra Misra, Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) pointed out that with continuous interaction between technology and economic activity, conflicting goals need to be resolved. The regulators role is for ensuring competition, and that most issues get resolved through interplay of market forces. A soft-touch regulation approach must give way to deregulation.
