Listio Tracks the Social Web

Listio logoThe rise of the social web, with everything being kitted out with comments, presence, tagging, voting, avatars, and similar features, continues to show no sign of slowing. We try to pick out some of the most useful and interesting applications in this arena to mention here, but there’s simply no way we could even begin to catalog everything that’s going on in the social web. Fortunately, we don’t have to. The folks over at Listio have done what should perhaps have been obvious: built a social web application to track the social web.

Listio bills itself as a “community directory of web 2.0 applications, tools, and services” and operates in much the same way as sites like Digg. Users can submit sites by filling out a form describing the site, uploading its logo, and tagging it. Then sites rise and fall in the rankings by a process of community voting. Users can also leave comments, and you can find sites by full-text search or RSS feed as well as by using the tag cloud.

Listio is at its best when you’re searching for Web 2.0 sites in a particular area. The coverage so far is good but not comprehensive – “CRM,” “project,” and “Gantt” all bring up hits, but “mindmap” doesn’t. Of course, as with any other site dependent on community-generated content, the success of Listio will depend on whether it catches on, but as it stands it’s already got a fair depth of content and is a good place to go trolling for new sites to check out.
