Round-Up: Mobile Content Use, UK vs US; Poor Satisfaction Levels; Russia

US Growth: Mobile payment company Bango has released some figures from its service, showing strong growth in the use of the mobile web in the United States. US mobile web use increased three-fold over the last year, according to Bango, making it the second-highest use country behind the UK. It should be noted that while Bango has a wide coverage (10 million users accessing over 3,000 mobile websites across Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas) it is still only one company, so the figures depend on the number of companies using Bango in a particular country (for example, people in Japan and South Korea almost certainly use the mobile internet more than the UK or US). However, the growth it shows in the US is probably reflective of a general increase in growth, which is good news for the mobile content industry. India has also shown some strong growth.

Satisfaction: Some members of the Mobile Entertainment Forum (MEF) have released the results of a survey showing that only 26 percent of mobile entertainment users in the US and UK are currently satisfied with their services… The highest satisfaction rates are for mobile TV in the US (at 37 percent of users) and music downloads in the UK (at 32 percent of users). In general, subscription based services such as mobile chat, mobile TV and information services are popular with US users, while in the UK downloaded entertainment including wallpapers and ringtones are preferred.

UK Market: Research firm Gfk M2 has predicted that UK consumers will spend 1 billion pounds (US$2 billion) on mobile content in 2007, representing an increase of more than 100 million pounds (US$200 million) year-on-year. In the first quarter of this year 83 million pounds (US$166 million) was spent on mobile games in the UK, outranking ringtones (76 million pounds) and music (23 million pounds). The video download market is an eigth of the mobile game market in the UK, reports Mobile Entertainment.

Russian Market: The Russian mobile content market brought in $882.3 million in the first half of 2006, and is expected to exceed $1 billion by 2010 according to C*News.
