The Indian Music Industry (IMI), which has been spearheading the anti-piracy raids in India, has now tied up with Singapore based Sydus for streaming music online and on mobile, reports Agencyfaqs. The deal allows Sydus access to over 500,000 music tracks, in 12 languages and from labels including Saregama, Universal, Tips and Sony BMG.
Sydus has a mobile application and a website for streaming music. The content will be provided both on demand and as an advertising supported free service. Sydus has tie-ups with Bacardi and Virgin Radio for its mobile service.
My experience with music via GPRS in India is that there is frequent buffering, and hence interruptions. Data costs are pretty high and, at least in case of Airtel which I use, the pay-per-use plan (NOP) doesn’t support third party applications. The Sydus-IMI service is expected to launch by end 2007, and I’m wondering about how it will impact sales of music online and on mobile.
