@ D: John McCain on Broadband, Net Neutrality, Market Economy

dconference 169Problems with broadband access: We are a very large country, but that’s no excuse. I believe broadband is an interstate issue, even though I am a federalist. We need to remove hurdles to make it happen. I would certainly have as little regulation on telecom and Internet as possible.
Net neutrality: Anything that impinges on the ability for people to have access needs to be considered very carefully. I worry about the consolidation of the pipes, but I will let the market and technology decide what happens.
On being behind in broadband: If I had choice between taking our technology or Korea’s, I would take ours…we have the best and brightest in the world.
Copyright issues: We probably do need a reform of copyright laws. Most members of Congress don’t understand the complexity of the issues involved, so we have to think this through.
Hiring smart people for our govt: McCain said he would hire people like John Chambers, Fred Smith, Steve Ballmer, if he was elected president.
