Govt sets up site, centers for NRI investment queries

So here’s a chance for non-resident Indians to deal with mouse-clicking rather than paper-pushing babus. The Times of India reports that the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs in association with the Confederation of Indian Industry has launched a “facilitation center”, which through its Web site and offices, will answer investment queries of the Indian diaspora. Indians abroad can now gain online access to investment-related information here but the report doesn’t mention where the brick and mortar versions of this center will be located. Seems like the Web site is still a work in progress though, since some critical links such as “feedback” and “contact us” lead nowhere. The article goes on to say that these “facilitation centers” will also help NRIs in the clearance of pending projects for a fee. Now does that mean that bribes are passe? Not trying to be over critical here and I do think it is a good step towards clarifying NRI investors’ queries instead making them run from pillar to post. Still, while the government is trying to make things so easy for the mere 25 million Indians abroad, what about taking some measures for the 1 billion Indians in the country. Entrepreneurs and investors in small-scale industries deserve even more facilitation and encouragement.
