Might be wishful thinking on its part: MTNL expects the number of Mumbai and Delhi customers for its IPTV service to be 40 times its current paltry base of 1,000. The state-owned telephone service provider is targeting the 40,000 customers for its digital television service this fiscal, A.K. Arora, executive director MTNL told tech news site CIOL.
The telco, which pilot launched its IPTV service in November 2006 and currently offers 50 channels, plans to launch 150 channels for the Mumbai subscribers. However, CIOL adds that former Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran was an enthusiastic proponent of this initiative. With A. Raja now in the driver’s seat, we need to see if he zooms ahead at the same speed as Maran.
