3D Mobile Games — A Discussion Of Its Worth

PocketGamer has a good article on 3D mobile games, the benefits and deficiencies of the technology. The article talks with Glu’s Chris White and Digital Chocolate’s Trip Hawkins about 3D games on mobiles, which haven’t really taken off — probably because of the increased development cost and smaller potential user base. White also pointed out that if a company creates a 3D game it normally creates the same game for lower-end handsets which still have to be “amazing”. I think the summarizing paragraph is at the end of the article: “But ultimately, 3D is just another tool in the game maker’s toolbox. “There are genres that benefit from a fully 3D world,” says Chris White, “but 3D shouldn’t be used for the sake of it. On the DS, no one cares about rendering technology, just whether the game is fun.” Humans have imagination, and good gameplay will stimulate that imagination, whereas amazing graphics won’t compensate for bad gameplay.
