Google will digitize around 800,000 books and manuscripts from Mysore University’s (MU) archives, reports DNA. This includes includes around 100,000 manuscripts, some dating back to the eight century. Google has offered to digitize the content for free, and MU has also received grants for digitization from the University Grants Commission. What’s important is that the MU intends to patent some exclusive content before releasing the information in the public domain. While the question of why Google has offered to digitize the content for free hasn’t been clearly answered, going by precedence, the company probably plans to serve up contextual ads related to the content.
