Fairfax Digital and Google have signed a deal on advertising and content, reports The Age. Some of Fairfax’s websites (www.smh.com.au, http://www.theage.com.au but not business nor New Zealand websites) will run Google AdWords advertisements, with the revenue being shared between Google and Fairfax. Fat Prophets equity analyst Greg Canavan reckons it’s a sign that Fairfax wants to focus on content rather than ad sales, but it doesn’t say that AdWords will completely replace other ads and besides, newspapers tend to have a fairly strong ad sales team. It could be a very easy/cheap way to get some incremental revenue, though.
On the content side, Fairfax Digital will use Google Video to broadcast some of its content, and Google Maps will be integrated into the Fairfax real estate website domain.com.au.
