Telefonica has released its first quarter earnings for the three months ending March 31st. Telefonica Group saw revenues increase 15.1 percent year-on-year to 13.747 billion euros (US$18.607 billion) for the quarter. This was mostly due to growth in Telefonica Espana and Telefonica Latinoamerica. Net profit increased by 7.7 percent year-on-year to 1.257 billion euros (US$1.701 billion). The group had 148.9 million mobile customers globally. The regional revenue distribution was: Telefonica Espana at 36.6 percent, Telefonica Latinoamerica at 34.1 percent and Telefonica O2 Europe at 25.6 percent.
Breaking out the various mobile businesses:
Telefonica Espana: Revenues grew 7.9 percent in the quarter to 2.336 billion euros (US$3.16 billion). The customer base grew slightly to 21.8 million.
Telefonica Latinoamerica: Revenues grew by 8.5 percent year-on-year to 4.675 billion euros (US$6.33 billion). Brazil contributed 38.4 percent of that, followed by Argentina at 12 percent and Venezuela at 11.1 percent. Across the region Telefonica had 117 million customers (including customers other than wireless), and increase of 14.1 percent year-on-year.
Telefonica O2: Revenues grew by 46.7 percent year-on-year to 3.534 billion euros (US$4.784 billion), and due to some aquisitions.
