YouTube wants to meet with Pentagon officials to try to convince them to reconsider its decision to block its site by troops using the Defense Department’s computer network, Marketwatch reported. The Pentagon said it was banning access to YouTube and 12 other sites, including MySpace, Metacafe, MTV, Pandora and Photobucket, in order to prevent potential viruses and other security concerns. Secondly, the government said that the excessive usgae of such sites was taxing the military’s computer network. Aside from YouTube, Ben Sun, CEO of Community Connect, the company that runs another site barred by the Pentagon, the African-American social net Blackplanet, said he feels the site shouldn’t be blocked since its traffic is small relative to YouTube’s and couldn’t possibly strain the military’s system. No word as to whether the military officials have granted any of the companies a hearing on the matter.
