Handset At Rs. 1234; Laptop At Rs. 410?

First up: after the launch of their low priced “Classic” monochromatic handset at Rs. 777, Reliance Communications has launched “Classic Colour” handsets priced at Rs. 1234. The Classic range of handsets includes Colour-FM series, Colour display and monochrome handsets with color film display with removable SIM cards that allow consumers to change models easily. There is a caveat, though – as per the release, the prices are valid for a limited period, till stocks last.

Now, the Business Standard reports that the Ministry for Human Resource Development (HRD) intends to manufacture around a million laptops at around $10 (approximately Rs. 410) each. They’ve approached the Chandigarh Semiconductor Complex Ltd for manufacturing chips for the same. The device will use a flash drive for storage, the mother board will be smaller. It will have an operating system, a word processor, a browser and MP3 capability, and will be a decidedly toned down version of a laptop. A timeline of around nine months has been set for the release of the same.
A $10 laptop? While they’re at it, why not try to make it edible as well…
