A. Raja Replaces Maran As Communications And IT Minister

Post Dayanidhi Maran’s resignation, the Environment and Forests Minister A. Raja has been appointed the minister for Communications and IT. Maran, whose resignation has been accepted by the President, seems to have left the Telecom industry in a state of limbo – the policy on 3G spectrum is still to be announced, and one doesn’t know whether his proposal to abolish roaming charges will be implemented. Media reports on Maran’s tenure have been varied: this report in the Business Standard suggests that he favored GSM operators and was anti-CDMA, while most other publications have lauded his achievements. Incidentally, the share price of Sun TV, owned by Dayanidhi Maran’s brother Kalanidhi Maran, have fallen 7.7 percent since the announcement of the formers resignation.
Raja is a lawyer by profession, and has been in charge of the Environment Ministry for the last three years. CNBC-TV18 painted a rather glum picture of his “achievements” over the past couple of years – apparently, several key posts that the ministry oversees have remained vacant during his tenure.
