Dayanidhi Maran Quits; Who Will Be The Next Telecom Minister?

The young and dynamic telecommunications minister Dayanidhi Maran has quit the Union Cabinet following a family dispute over who will succeed his party patriarch M Karunanidhi of DMK. That’s going to keep the telecom ministry in a state of uncertainty for sometime. It’s likely somebody from DMK will only take over from Maran. But can we get a suitable successor to Maran is the big question?
Maran has been instrumental in declaring the year 2007 as the Year of Broadband. He has also been constantly pushing for higher telephone penetration. Maran’s latest agenda was to give away free broadband in order to raise the connectivity levels. Besides, the 3G policy was expected to be finalised in the next month or two, which would get delayed now. All told, Maran had a good track record as a telecom minister and he was considered business-friendly. Now all eyes will be on who will succeed him.
