Google Mobile Maps Hits UK

Google has launched a new version of Google Mobile Maps in the UK — well, a version specifically for the UK from the sound of it. The Register notes that the service has “enhanced the route-planning capability as well as adding searches for local businesses and traffic information”. The route planning works well but traffic information is currently unavailable, although it is planned (and on the menu). Tech.co.uk notes the search features: “[local] business searches, directions, tube/train stations, zoom and satellite imagery”. It also has recommendations for nearby restaurants. Both sites note the data-hungry nature of the application — it’s a few hundred kilobits to download and connects to the net every time you use it, but the UK is one of the few countries where operators offer unlimited data plans so there is a market that can use it without losing an inordinate amount of money.
