— UNESCO is funding a pilot project in Kerala, to enable village councils to have their own web portals with information in local language Malayalam. 9 village councils. Based on the success of this initiative, Akshaya, an initiative by the Kerala government, will extend this project to all village districts. Interestingly, local advertisements, yellow pages and a call center are a part of the plan. [More at Tech 2)
— At village called Khuda Jassu in Chandigarh Union Territory, an e-governance facilitation center has been inaugurated. The e-Gram Sampark allows depositing of bills, collection of pensions, bus passes and other utility based services. Chandigarh intends to extend this facility to all villages in the union territory. — Reliance Communications has signed an MOU with the West Bengal Government to set up 1860 Common service Centers (CSC) in the state. The project is expected to cater to 26 lakh households, providing services including finance, healthcare, education/training, entertainment, energy, travel (incidentally, the Reliance ADA Group has ventures/investments in ventures in most of these segments). Each CSC will have at least one PC, and will be managed by franchises. [Via release]
