Popular Linux distro Ubuntu is planning a mobile OS — “the Ubuntu Mobile and Embedded project aims to create the open source platform for initial release in October 2007″ reports the BBC. Intel has joined the Ubuntu community to develop the system, and has already demo’d a prototype. Intel already supports the Gnome Mobile & Embedded Initiative (GMAE) and has announced plans for a chip for mobiles that will be one-seventh the size of conventional processors and use just 10 percent of the power…codenamed Silverthorn.
The Linux-based mobile efforts are often criticized as being fragmented, but with Intel behind this the Ubuntu effort should get a firmer start.
