M:Metrics, a mobile market measurement company, has released the top ten list of mobile Web sites in the U.S. and the U.K. Again, for the second month running, Google leads the pack, followed by a mix of search engine sites and content destinations. (The results are not based on survey of a set number of users. Instead, M:Metrics employs a patent-pending meter technology to monitor a panel of smartphone device owners, selected to represent a population which accounts for a highly disproportionate share of mobile data services usage.
The popularity of search engine domains is a case of good news/ bad news, depending on your perspective. Either overall users’ awareness of mobile search is on the rise and they are beginning their exploration of the mobile Web by repeating their PC search habits, or other methods of interfacing with content (including other mobile search services) are so poor they choose to stick with the usual suspects. The popularity of operator domain in the U.K. suggests their efforts to improve portal navigation have paid off. Press release
