A Sony poll conducted by ICM highlights the shift in radio listening from analog to digital platforms. The research, published today, says three in 10 people listen to radio via the Internet; more than four in 10 via digital TV and one in five listens to it on an MP3 or other digital music player, The Guardian reports. The findings, based on a sample of 563 people, suggests nearly a fifth of radio listening (18 percent) is now via platforms other than a radio receiver. The survey was “based on a representative sample of 563 people” (which sounds a little low) covered all the different ways of listening to the radio.
The figure for mobile use is somewhat higher than the number published by Rajar, the industry’s official audience measurement body. In its last data release for the fourth quarter of last year, Rajar set the number of people who listened to the radio via a mobile phone at just under 8 percent. ICM’s study said it was 12 percent, although if the 18-24 year old age group considered it’s one in three. New Rajar statistics for 1Q2007 will be released on May 10.
