Being in the same city as AOL (Bangalore in India), and probably aware of AOLs plans (as secretive as they’re being about ‘em) Yahoo has announced a number of changes, and Yahoo co-founder David Filo is in Bangalore to announce them:
– India has been designated as the Centre of Excellence for Product Engineering for ‘Emerging Markets’ by Yahoo, with the Yahoo International group being restructured into Asia, Europe and Emerging Markets. India will be the centre for enabling growth of Yahoo in emerging markets, and Filo inaugurated today a facility with 2.2 lakh square feet area, with a seating capacity of 1600. Sharad Sharma has been appointed the CEO of Yahoo India R&D, also heading Engineering for India and Emerging Markets.
Yahoo has also officially announced the launch of two initiatives that have been live for a while:
– Yahoo OurCity mashups which now cover 20 Indian cities including tier two cities like Bhubaneswar, Bhopal, Madurai, Chandigarh, and Jaipur. Yahoo OurCity Mashups will incorporate content from Yahoo India Maps, Yahoo India Answers, Flickr etc, as well as user generated content from blogs.
– Yahoo India maps, powered by Map My India, has also been launched. The maps cover 170 cities, 4785 towns and 220,000 villages across India.
DNA reports that Yahoo has over 1000 people in India, accounting for the 20 percent of the company’s workforce. Filo didn’t disclose specific numbers, but he said that Yahoo’s revenues from India tripled last year.
