Opera Interactive Tech Apologises Over Phone In Scandal

Opera Interactive Technology, the company that provided GMTV with its premium rate phone-in quiz service which was revealed to be drawing up shortlists of winners long before the lines were closed, today apologised “unreservedly” to the broadcaster and competition entrants, reports The Guardian (reg). The company (unrelated to the browser maker) issued a statement which read: “Opera Interactive Technology has completed this morning preliminary investigations in relation to the GMTV competitions…Those investigations have shown certain irregularities in our internal processes which should have prevented anything like this from happening…We have put new systems and processes in place that will ensure that this can never happen again.” That’s highly likely — at least, I’d be surprised if the company gets any new customers for this service for quite a while. GMTV has already dropped it after apologising to viewers and claiming it didn’t know of the problem. Opera also said it would be working diligently with GMTV and regulators ICSTIS/Ofcom to recompense those competition entrants, although I don’t see how that is feasibly possible.
