India To Get Live TV By May Via GPRS

Bharti Telesoft, an arm of the Bharti Enterprise, is launching a live streaming TV service over India’s GPRS networks…Bharti Telesoft said that its technology compresses an audio file four to five times smaller than an MP3 and a video file up to 10 times more efficient than MPEG-4. To use the service subscribers need a GPRS activated handset (less than 20 million out of India’s 140 million subscribers fall into this category) reports the Economic Times, and users download a client over the air to use it. It apparently streams what is shown on TV, there is a 20 second delay between the show on the TV and on the mobile. Bharti Telesoft expects to have half-a-million subscribers paying Rs 25-50 (US$0.60 – $1.20) per month by May. The article describes the companies customers as operators, which suggests data charges may not be an issue.
