Reliance Retail Has Plans For E-Commerce

So now Mukesh Ambani has online plans: Reliance Retail, reports the Economic Times, has plans to launch a site for online retailing, and set up delivery points for completing the loop. The online push for some of the large retailers like Reliance Fresh and Bharti-Walmart is not unexpected but it remains to be seen as to what payment mechanism they adopt – credit card penetration is limited, and is cash on delivery feasible? At least in cities, mom-and-pop stores allow ordering by phone, and payment is cash-on-delivery. ET quotes a source who says that Reliance Retail expects 5-6 percent to come from e-commerce.
Also, there would have been an opportunity for Reliance to set up m-commerce on Reliance Mobile World, or tie-up with Reliance Web World outlets had the Ambani’s not split Reliance between them. One can pretty much be sure of one thing though – this online venture won’t be called BIG Clicks. ;)
