Palm has announced plans to launch a Linux-based mobile phone browser by the end of the year, although I’ve pretty much given up on trying to keep track of what it’s doing with the old Palm OS, which is now owned by Access (which has also released a Linux OS). LinuxDevices notes that the new Linux-based platform will “enable simultaneous voice/data processing and multi-threading; additionally, it will provide the flexibility to enable the company to produce more variations of its smartphones products, more rapidly, according to Palm’s presentation materials…Few details regarding the new platform are known, other than inclusion of the Opera browser and ChatterMail email client“. It will also help if the mobile smartphone OS industry undergoes the consolidation that’s expected — Linux, Windows and Symbian are the definite winners, any other OS will struggle to stay relevant.
