Cisco’s Continued M&A Ambitions

A good profile in BW of the top M&A executive at Cisco, which has recently made some big and small acquisitions, including some in the digital media sector as well.
Ned Hooper, the little-known 39-year-old was recently put in charge of business development, which includes mergers and acquisitions as well as VC investments (previously Dan Scheinman was in charge of M&A, but he’s now the head of Cisco’s media group). He is in favor of big deals: Larger transactions “give us a level of scale from the start, rather than building from scratch,” he says. “It’s the only way to move the needle at a company of this size.”
Where will the next deals be found? “The company isn’t saying much, but Bill Whyman, an analyst with researcher International Strategy & Investment Group, says the good fits may be found in network storage and in Internet video infrastructure, the story says. He thinks storage company Network Appliance (NTAP), with a $13.5 billion market cap, would fit well with Cisco. Akamai could be another fit, he said.”
